With Miami’s first F1 Grand Prix set for May 8, the city has truly solidified its reputation as a major sports town. Just name a pro league, and Miami has skin in the game.
From the NFL and MLB to the NHL, NBA and beyond – Miami is simply synonymous with sports. Now, the Sunshine State’s avid racing fans can show their hometown pride too, thanks to a 10-year deal with Formula 1.
A Look at Miami’s New Formula 1 Track
Originally, the Miami Grand Prix was slated to be held in the downtown area. However, Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross was part of the big effort to find a long-term home for the race. So it didn’t come as a surprise to see that the event was eventually moved to a circuit surrounding the Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium home.
The stadium has been converted into a racing complex featuring club seating, a temporary yacht marina, and a pool area including two stories of cabanas. The 3.363-mile track is comprised of three straights and 19 turns, with the F1 cars reaching an estimated top speed of 200 mph with DRS enabled!
The entire track has been designed with the fan experience in mind, providing lots of opportunities to see some close racing action, and top-grade passing from the drivers. And with 10 temporary bridges installed around the campus, fans will be able to roam freely and experience the race from many vantage points.
History of the Miami Grand Prix
The last time Florida witnessed a Formula 1 victory was way back on December 12, 1959 when New Zealander Bruce McLaren crossed the finish line at the United States Grand Prix in Sebring, Florida. In 2016, a campaign was launched to bring the F1 competition back to the panhandle, and in 2018, a proposal for the Miami Grand Prix to be added as a round to the F1 World Championship was submitted to the city of Miami.
Fast forward to today, we now see Miami joining Austin, Texas on the 2022 F1 schedule. With next year set to heat up even more thanks to a third U.S. race location, Las Vegas, being added to the calendar — and there’s no doubt in our minds it’s going to be EPIC!
