A year ago this week, the groundbreaking wrestler Chyna was found dead in her home from what would later be confirmed as an accidental overdose. At the time of her tragic death, filmmakers happened to be following her for a no-holds-barred documentary. Now, that film has its first trailer.
It’s about as a depressing as you’d imagine.
Chyna, born Joanie Laurer, clearly had a troubled existence. That became painfully obvious to filmmaker Erik Angra as he made this movie.
“In the last few weeks of her life, we all did become concerned that she was actually having a real problem,” he recently told E! News. “We reached out to the management and we reached out to her lawyers. They were all scrambling trying to get her help and that’s something I’ll live with the rest of my life. Just feeling like I didn’t do enough and the guilt of that.”
If the trailer is any indication, the bulk of documentary focuses on Chyna’s demons and her struggle coping with them. But Angra told E! News that despite her obvious struggles, Chyna had a lighter side.
“She was a jokester. She was warm. She was friendly. She did impressions. She was a dork. She was just so much fun to be around,” he said.
Let’s hope some of that made its way into the doc, because that trailer makes it look about as fun as being in the ring with Chyna.
