Bulova Launches ‘Blood Moon’ Lunar Pilot Watch
An update to the NYC watchmaker’s Lunar Pilot collection inspired by the reddish tinge of a total lunar eclipse.
Bulova has updated its signature Lunar Pilot collection honoring the American watchmaker’s legacy with NASA and the U.S. space program with a new “Blood Moon” pilot watch.
On August 2, 1971, Apollo 15’s mission commander, the seventh man to walk on the moon and the first to drive the Lunar Rover, made history while wearing a Bulova chronograph on his wrist. The astronomically inclined Lunar Pilot watch was used in space to track time, ensuring no one ran out of oxygen, water or battery power in the portable life support-system backpack.
“It was also used to back up the on-board timers for the critical reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere. The timepiece performed flawlessly, withstanding pressures of changing atmospheric conditions, fluctuating temperatures and gravitational shifts,” says New York City-based Bulova, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of the moon mission in 2021 with previous releases in the Lunar Pilot collection.
The latest launch seeks inspiration from a total lunar eclipse, when a full moon moves completely into Earth’s shadow and takes on a reddish tinge. Bulova’s new Lunar Pilot is the same size as the original at 43.5 mm featuring a silver-tone stainless steel case with a matching multi-link bracelet. The striking red dial features silver-white chronograph sub-dials. Powered by Bulova’s proprietary NP20 High Precision Quartz (HPQ) chronograph movement accurate to 1/20th second.
Other features include a flat sapphire crystal, a silver-white tachymeter scale on the outer dial, super luminous hands and markers, and 50-meter water resistance with a screw down case back. Offered as a strap set with an extra black fine leather NATO strap featuring quick-release spring bars for easy interchangeability, the new Blood Moon Lunar Pilot watch comes in a special box with a storybook.
It’s just the latest space-themed watch from Bulova, which released a watch made from an ancient meteorite earlier this year. The brand’s Blood Moon Lunar Pilot watch is available here for $895.
