New Balance & Todd Snyder Debut Fresh Take on Retro 997 Sneaker
The retro “Triborough” silhouette revisits what was a cutting-edge design from the early 1990s.
Menswear titan Todd Snyder and storied sneaker brand New Balance have launched a new collector’s edition of the 997, joining these colorful and chalk-striped variants of the classic silhouette.
Available in muted gray, blue and burgundy hues, the “Triborough” 997 revisits what was a cutting-edge design when the original 997 first debuted in 1990, but reinterprets it as “a sleek piece of footwear for the modern gentleman.” Hypebeast notes that all three get tan detailing above the toebox, around the collar and on the tongue, where the text “New Balance – Made in USA” is stitched in brown block lettering.
The large signature “N” logo that appears on the side panel of contemporary New Balance sneakers has also been swapped out for a retro “Flying NB,” a rare archival logo that appeared on the 997 at launch and vanished soon after. In terms of construction, the ENCAP midsole cushioning and pig suede upper are designed to be both lightweight and durable for all-day wear,
“The 997 is one of my favorite New Balance silhouettes and I wanted to create something low-profile, yet eye-catching,” Snyder said in a statement. “We decided to feature the Flying NB logo as an ode to the humble beginnings of the shoe. It really was the first of its kind.”
Priced at $230, the New Balance x Todd Snyder Triborough 997 is currently available exclusively online.
