Seiko first launched Seiko 5 Sports watches in 1963. You can still find the vintage versions online, going for up to nearly $800 if they’re in good shape.
Many qualities found in the original Seiko 5 line ended up inspiring complications (features) that are considered standard benchmarks today. So Seiko decided to relaunch the line with a new series of 27 watches, all slotted under five broad categories of use: Sports, Suits, Specialist, Street and Sense.
The new Seiko 5s will be familiar to fans of the vintage line, as they carry many of the same key features:
- Automatic movements
- Day/date window at the 3 o’clock position
- They’re water resistant, of course
- Tough bracelet and a 42.5mm stainless steel case.
Add to these a clear caseback and magnetic resistance and you’ve got a killer combo of classic and modern–something Seiko does exceedingly well.
Seiko lovers will get a 41-hour power reserve and shock resistance as well, all for a price range of $314-$381.
