When we first glimpsed the great Emily Ratajkowski sashaying down the red carpet of Friday’s Harper’s Bazaar Fashion Week event, we just about burst into tears it was so wonderful.
Both a fearlessly revealing dress and an unapologetic feminist statement, it seemed like a slam-dunk of an apparel decision. But not everyone (i.e., those pesky body shamers) was on board with the most memorable red-carpet moment in eons.
Reality television curmudgeon Tim Gunn, guest hosting on E! Channel’s Fashion Police, gave his 1960s-era opinion no one asked for.
“If I saw this at a party, all I could do would be to drink. I couldn’t eat. There’s absolutely no way,” Gunn griped. “This dress is so appallingly vulgar and revealing. Why wear anything? Why not just take it all off?”
When co-host NeNe Leakes came to her defense, Gunn grew even more shrill.
“Is this all driven by social media? Is this all just about [getting] everybody shocked?” Gunn continued. “I will tell you, I’m not shocked. I lived through the 1960s. No decade was more shocking than that when it comes to fashion. This is just vulgar and repugnant.”
Don’t think Emily didn’t get in a few words edgewise, cutting Gunn down to size as she did before with Piers Morgan.
In a series of tweets, Ratajkowski called for an end of the policing of what women wear, a point she was clearly making with her dress in the first place.
When I wrote my Glamour article, I was just thinking of men who call women attention seeking for being sexy

I wasn't even thinking of the hosts of nationally televised shows who call women vulgar because they can see their stomachs

It's 2016. Why keep trying to dictate what women can wear?
